Greetings everyone!
I hope everything is going well on your
farm as most of you are continuing to wrap
up calving and I’m going to be wrapping up
my internship with The Cattle Business
Weekly the first of May. The weather has
been cooperating with most of us as we
haven’t had much snow and blessed with just
gloomy skies.
Talking about May, a reminder to all the
juniors that registration for Regionals and
Nationals are quickly approaching, they are
due May 15th. I encourage for all
junior to attend since Regionals are at our
back door, in Spencer, Iowa. If you are
considering showing at regionals, a TB test
is a must! Everyone needs a whole herd test
and an individual test within 30 days of the
show. (Remember that you can only test every
60 days.) Exhibitors need to make sure the
tests are in order! Please contact your
local vet if you have any questions about TB
testing.
As I sign off, I want to leave those
families that are busy with an easy recipe.
If you are running kids to sporting events
or if you are out late with the newly born
calves, this is a simple recipe that you can
make and eat in a small amount of time. I
look forward to seeing all of you over the
summer at a show or at the summer field day
at Aggen’s. Have a great spring and take
care!
Sincerely,
Sara Thissen, MJSA President

VET CORNER
Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Board of Animal
Health today announced that a Beltrami County beef
cattle herd has tested positive for bovine
Tuberculosis (TB). This is the fourth positive herd
detected since October 2007, and it will likely
result in the downgrade of Minnesota’s bovine TB
status from Modified Accredited Advanced (MAA) to
Modified Accreditied (MA), as required by the U. S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) Code of Federal
Regulations. “All Minnesota producers planning to
ship animals interstate should still contact their
veterinarian to determine state import requirements
prior to movement,” said Minnesota Board of Animal
Health Executive Director and State Veterinarian Dr.
Bill Hartmann. “Individual state import requirements
may differ from federal requirements, so it’s
important to verify them prior to shipment.”
Contact your veterinarian for important health
regulations concerning travel to spring cattle
shows.

35th Annual Minnesota State Simmental Weekend
Rochester, Minn. February 22, 2008
The annual meeting of the Minnesota Junior Simmental
Association (MJSA) was called to order at 4:00 p.m.
by President Sara Thissen on Friday, February 22,
2008 at the Holiday Inn South in Rochester, Minn.
All junior members that were present were asked to
stand and introduce themselves by stating their
name, home town and any position that they might
hold. There were 20 junior members present.
The Secretary’s report from last year’s meeting on
February 23, 2007 was read by acting Secretary Mary
Virnig and was approved as read.
The Treasurer’s report was given by Amanda
Eberspacher. The Junior Association had a CD that
matured in May and was transferred into a new
account that matured in January worth $9,000. $1,500
of that CD was transferred to another CD that
matures in April and the other $7,500 went into a CD
that will mature in June. We have $817.94 in our
checking account. Members were asked to pay their
dues by May 15 to Amanda. Last year, when a member
paid their dues, they were given a decal and it was
asked if they liked that. Almost everyone said they
did.
Old business discussed: The 2007 Regional Classic
was held in Kearney, Neb., and 12 kids represented
Minnesota. The 2007 National Classic was held in
conjunction with the Breeder’s Sweepstakes in
Louisville, Ky. Minnesota had three participants.
The 2007 Minnesota Simmental Queen Megan Seifert
reported that she had a fun year travelling around
the state as queen. High school seniors were
reminded of the Minnesota Livestock Breeders’
Association Scholarship and to talk to Sara if they
need a form.
New business discussed: The 2008 Regional Classic
will be held in Spencer, Iowa. Members were
encouraged to attend and to book hotel rooms as soon
as possible. Ralph and Mena Kaehler are in charge of
organizing the Classic. Each state association was
asked to contribute $3,000 to the Regional to help
defray the costs. The MSA senior board agreed to pay
half as long as the MJSA paid the other half. Our
half will come from the CD that will mature in
April. We have gathered 80 units of semen and 20
merchandise items for the auction tonight. The money
from the semen auction goes towards the senior board
and the money from the merchandise auction goes
towards the junior board.
The feature breed at the 2008 Minnesota Beef Expo
will be Simmental. The senior board is asking if the
juniors would be willing to help provide the dessert
and decorations. Amanda Eberspacher will ask Schwans
Foods for a donation of the dessert. The decoration
committee chairman is Theresa Claeys. Ways to
promote the MJSA at the Expo were brainstormed; some
were trivia at the meal, decals given to all showing
Simmentals. If anyone had any other ideas, they were
asked to contact the junior board.
In past years, the MJSA has sponsored the Tri-State
4-H Show, Minnesota Black and Bridle, West Central
Minnesota Junior Livestock Show, Minnesota Beef
Expo, AJSA Regional Classic and AJSA National
Classic. Eric Thesing moved to continue sponsoring
the current shows, Theresa Claeys seconded and
motion passed. There will be a Field Day at the
Aggen’s farm this summer, the weekend after the
Regionals.
The way that travel reimbursements to Regionals and
Nationals were given out was discussed and it was
decided that there was too much money going to too
few families the way that disbursement is currently
set up. The MJSA Executive Board will discuss how
the best way to give the money out would be.
This year an Outstanding Senior Award will be given
out to a MSA senior member who has helped the junior
association out. This will be an annual award. All
junior members were asked to come up during the
banquet to help give the award out.
Fundraising was discussed. Currently our only
fundraiser is the merchandise auction. We need to
have another in order to continue to support all the
show that we currently do. Some ideas that were
generated were a clothing line, worker auction, ear
tag sale and an embryo sale.
Elections were held and the new officers are:
President: Sara Thissen
Vice President: Matt Pearson
Treasurer: Amanda Eberspacher will start her second
year in a three year term
Secretary: Mary Virnig
Board of Directors: Seth Kaehler, Jennifer Thesing,
C.J. Mulert
A huge thank you was given to Val and Lori
Eberspacher for all of their hard work and
dedication as junior advisors. Andrea moved to
adjourn the meeting, Eric seconded. Meeting was
adjourned at 4:58 p.m.
Respectfully, Mary Virnig, Secretary |
Greetings
Simmental Enthusiasts!
Hooray for another successful Simmental weekend! I
would like to thank everyone that donated items to
the merchandise auction and help to make it a great
success for the Juniors. Your support for our
association is greatly appreciated! I would also
like to thank Marla Thissen for doing an excellent
job in the food stand and also to all those who
brought bars. I am very excited about the upcoming
year and look forward to seeing everyone at summer
events! Mark your calendars for the Minnesota
Simmental Field Day being held at Oak Meadow Farms
in June. Hope to see you all there!

would like to thank all of my fellow juniors for giving
me the opportunity to give input and help out as this
